ABSTRACT FROM EXHIBITION

"The original gown was elegant and timeless; I endeavoured to retain this classic element in my new design but in a modern context. The silk fabric of the gown has a structural feel to it through its stiff drape; in keeping with its nature I aimed to create an architectural, sculptural quality to my final design. A key feature of the garment is the centre panel of hand stitched honeycomb pleats, design to create a focal point and add texture. My intent for my new design was to depart from the fitted, heavily boned structure of the original garment and create free standing form. The shape of the cape however echoes the familiar silhouette of the former train. My completed garment is a recontextualistion of the original gown, designed in a manner that subtly reflects the history of its previous form.”
